The Adult Literacy Center of Ozaukee County serves three types of students:

  • Adult Basic Education (ABE) students with diverse backgrounds and needs who want to improve their English reading and writing skills

  • English Language Learners (ELL) who are non-native speakers, often immigrants or refugees, who seek to master English reading, writing, speaking and comprehension

  • Pre-GED students who are interested in ultimately obtaining a GED certificate but are not yet ready for GED classes.

Our tutors work with students on a one-to-one basis, usually meeting once or twice a week, either in our classrooms at Grace Lutheran Church, or at a local public library. Tutors receive training before they work with students. We follow a structured curriculum with built-in assessments to measure progress, and add other resources as necessary to meet each student's individual goals. Students work at their own pace and set their own schedules to accommodate school, family and job responsibilities. We have a computer lab with Rosetta Stone and other language learning software.
